Measuring Life by Events: Felix the Tour Guide

It is March of 2013 and Felix is a Tour Guide in Taiwan. He was born in South Vietnam but, in 1974, during his teens, he went to Hongkong where he stayed for 3 months before migrating to Taiwan. In April of 1975, Saigon, South Vietnam’s capital fell to the communists, marking the end of the Vietnam war era.

In Taiwan, Felix went to university. After finishing school, he proceeded to work in a local office, but due to a recession, he was fired after 1 year. This motivated him to learn an entrepreneurial skill set that would give him work – tour-guiding. Thereafter, he worked as a tour guide for the next 15 years.

He went to the US as an immigrant because his family from South Vietnam had eventually managed to relocate there. In America he worked for the next 15 years at various jobs, including sales of computer parts. He was good at selling but knows nothing about using the computer. When the internet came along, it cut profit to be made in selling computer parts because online selling became prevalent.

In 2011 Felix decided to move from the US back to Taiwan. It is barely 2 years that he has since worked at the job he loves best. Tour-guiding is his only world. It occupies his time for most of the day and he rents a small room in the city center for sleeping at night. He is still a bachelor and I reckon his age must be around 55.

Today his mom is still alive and lives in the US, staying with his 3 sisters who are all divorcees. They will come to visit him in Taiwan this year, hopefully.

When life is measured by events in your timeline like Felix’s escape from tyranny (1974), University (1980), Tour Guide (1995), and working in America (1996-2001), 55 or so years doesn’t seem that long.

Enjoy life while you can. Cheers!
